Graphic Design . . . what’s it all about?
According to Wikipedia, the term graphic design is defined as such:
Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, iconography and illustration.
In fact, the field of graphic design now includes 8 different subsets of design:
-
- Visual identity
- Marketing & advertising
- User interface
- Publication
- Packaging
- Motion
- Environmental
- Art & illustration
It’s been said that anyone can learn the technical skills necessary to create design using the industry-standard products from Adobe. There are, of course, lots of guidelines and rules that govern what makes “good” design and they can be learned as well. But is that all there is to be successful in the design field?
The profession of graphic design has seen huge changes, driven, of course, by technology. Changes so massive it would be impossible to address them here in this blog. There is one thing that has not changed about graphic design. And it’s the purpose and perspective for this blog.
That one thing? Ideas . . . conceptualization. Design can be taught, but what good does it do for a product, service, etc., if a compelling idea doesn’t drive it? That’s where the rubber meets the road, so to speak.
Design wise, this blog is not impressive. But that’s part of the presentation . . . it’s simple so the ideas presented can be the main focus. Hopefully Design Discussions will give you food for thought, so to speak. I hope you enjoy it. Drop me a line and let me know what you think.
